Writing Workshops Bring People Together

We gather weekly to write. We come from different places and carry different stories. Some of us are homeless. Others are not. Some are in between.

We could be defined by our differences—of belief, race, economic circumstance—but we are not.

The simple human act of writing together and then reading our pieces aloud to one another erases divides and knits us into community.

INSTRUCTIONS:

For each group of writing below, select one prompt and write for 10-15 minutes.

• What does coffee mean to you?

• Write about beekeeping.

• What is your hidden talent? How did you come by it? Describe it.

Writing 2

• What is your favorite quote from a movie or book? Write about it.

• Write about writing.

• If you were in charge of writing the news for a day, what kind of articles would you write? What would your headlines be?

Writing 3

• Write about a difficult or /painful experience that you can laugh about now.

• What is holding you back?

• What takes your breath away?

One week ago we invited readers to join a campaign to support Michael, a friend from the workshop whose fight against homelessness had taken a sharp downward turn.

Thanks to the support of nearly two dozen people, with gift amounts ranging from $5 into the $100s, he was able to secure short-term housing for several weeks at a local hotel.

This support has felt like a life saver and given him great hope. “I’m blown away,” he said.
