Editor’s Note

In 2017 and 2018, artist and writer David Alan Goldberg created a series of illustrated magazines for Speak Up to chronicle aspects of life while homeless.

The series—which came to be called Beans—covered sleeping, eating, using the bathroom, and even the challenge of getting decent coffee. Combining years of experience on the streets with a unique blend of acerbic humor and cultural commentary, each issue became a sensation that sold out within weeks.

Over the next two months, for the first time, all issues will be available online.

This first one is public for all. The rest are for paid members only.
