Printed Workshop Magazine
We’re preparing to publish a printed anthology magazine of select writings from workshop.
All current and former workshop writers are invited to submit multiple pieces of writing.
Submit Your Work
Workshop writers: send your work in response to any prompt or any piece of writing that began in the workshop.
Also please consider writing on these top prompts from the last 16 months:
List five things you own. Write about them. Describe their importance in your life.
Home is… / Homelessness is…
Write about the library.
What is holding you back? Or write about overcoming obstacles—past, present, future.
What does America mean to you? Write about patriotism, citizenship, etc.
Write about something you believed but have changed your mind about.
Write about fear. About facing it, overcoming it, living with it.
By submitting from the shared prompts above, we’ll be able to see the diverse work that comes from a shared starting place. An illustration of how a diverse group of a people can become a united community.
To submit, email your typed pieces—and the accompanying prompt—to Matt Shaw at mattshaw@speakupmag.org.
Not a Workshop Writer?
Send a piece anyway! Select from one of the prompts and email over your submission.
We’re going to make space in the magazine for readers who aren’t able—due to geography or other limitations—to attend in-person workshops.
“About Me” + Photo
The magazine will feature an autobiographical write up (written by you) and photo for each author. The photo can be a face picture or some other kind of photo that represents you.
Feel free to be creative with the bio write up. It can be serious or straightforward or sideways. Such as:
Write your life story from the perspective of your shoes.
Write about the five most important events in your life.
Write about hopes in your life. Past hopes. Future hopes. Hopes realized. Hopes dashed.
Write a sales pitch for yourself. Or write an anti-sales pitch.
The Magazine Will Give Voice and Create Income for People Facing Homelessness
Once printed, copies can be sold by people facing homelessness.
They will keep 100% of the sale price.
Donate to Print the Magazine
We’re looking to publish at least 1,000 copies of a perfect-bound full color 6 x 9 inch magazine—or book, depending on length.
Our fundraising goal for this project is $4,000.
