What to Give Someone on the Streets

How do you respond when a beggar approaches your vehicle and asks for help? Below are a couple recommendations, based on hundreds of encounters with people facing homelessness.

Keep it Simple

Show them respect, speak with kindness, and give something useful. This works no matter where you live.

Prepare in Advance

Assemble any combination of the items below in a gallon-sized zipper bag. Keep a couple handy in your vehicle.

  • Socks

  • Foot Powder (small container)

  • Water bottle(s)

  • Toothbrush & toothpaste

  • Non-perishable snacks like crackers and nuts

  • Hand sanitizer (alcohol-free)

  • A hand-written note of encouragement

  • Also consider: Nail clippers, encouraging literature, a comb or brush, soap, washcloth, shampoo, toilet paper

  • …and one more thing (see below)

Again, engage them with empathy and courtesy. Ask their name, and use it back when speaking to them. Make eye contact (remove your sunglasses). Treat them like a human going through hardship. “What you are facing must be really hard. Here are a few things to help.”

About the “One More Thing”

The final item on the list above is a Pursuit Pack from Speak Up.

Each simple kit contains resources that equip someone facing homeless with a chance to earn immediate money and start developing sustainable recurring income.

Right now we are fundraising to create another fifty Pursuit Packs. Once the $5,000 campaign is complete, they’ll be publicly available.
